Moisture
Moisture caused by rain, but also building moisture, is bad for the building and its occupants.
If the insulation material becomes damp, the insulation value can quickly decrease.
A material with an open structure, such as glass wool and rock wool, is more sensitive to this than a closed synthetic foam, such as EPS or PUR.
The processing of a wet and slack material will also negatively affect performance.
Mineral wool absorbs significantly more moisture than PUR and EPS. This has a major negative impact on the insulation value.
Therefore, the choice of insulation material plays a very important role.
Insulation values
Compared to EPS, Rockwool scores U= 0.035 W/mK significantly lower than Neopor® W/mK.
EcoBriq blocks are made with a density of at least 26kg/m³.
Moisture absorption (e.g. in case of flooding)
In the case of moisture absorption, the insulating power of mineral wool is halved after two days. In the case of PUR, it is reduced by more than 22%. In the case of EPS, moisture hardly affects the insulation value even after two weeks.
In a German professional journal for roofers (source: Das Dachdecker Handwerk 18.2008), the manufacturer Rockwool explains the limitations of mineral wool.
In a project that was investigated, the mineral wool became so damp due to leakage that it no longer had a good insulating capacity, according to the manufacturer.
If there is a risk of moisture penetration, from an insulation point of view it is advisable to choose synthetic insulation such as EPS or PUR and to avoid using open fibre materials such as glass wool and rock wool.
